LoRaWAN, NB-IoT or cellular: choosing connectivity for field deployments

22 March 2026 · 5 min read · Engineering

Coverage maps rarely survive contact with a plantation, a basement or a steel structure. How Acta specifies networks in Malaysian conditions.

Match the radio to the message

A soil probe sending twelve bytes every fifteen minutes and a vision gateway streaming inference results have almost nothing in common. Choosing one network technology for an entire estate usually means overpaying for one class of device and underserving another.

Hybrid designs are normal: LoRaWAN for dense low-rate sensing, NB-IoT where a national network already reaches, cellular or fibre for gateways and edge compute, satellite for genuinely remote assets.

Survey, then specify

Tropical canopy, reinforced concrete, metal cladding and monsoon rain all attenuate signals in ways a desktop planning tool underestimates. Acta runs physical site surveys with reference nodes before committing to gateway counts and antenna heights.
